An espresso dosing funnel is a small ring that sits on top of the portafilter basket while you grind, stir, or settle the coffee. It does not improve espresso by itself. It keeps the puck prep clean enough to repeat.

Home espresso baskets are shallow. A fresh dose can mound above the rim before tamping, especially with fluffy grinds. Without a funnel, light tapping or stirring throws coffee onto the counter.
