Pour boiling water into a cold glass and it cracks; pour it into a borosilicate teapot and nothing happens. The difference isn't thickness or luck — it's a number called the coefficient of thermal expansion, and borosilicate's is about one third of ordinary glass.

Glass cracks when one part expands faster than another. Borosilicate barely expands at all, so the stress never builds. That's why lab beakers and good teapots use the same material.

Why glass cracks in the first place

When hot water hits one side of ordinary soda-lime glass, that side expands while the rest is still cold. The mismatch creates internal tension, and glass — strong in compression, weak in tension — gives way along the stress line. The crack follows the temperature gradient, not a flaw in the glass.

What boron changes

Borosilicate replaces some of the sodium in the glass recipe with boron trioxide. The result expands roughly three times less per degree than soda-lime glass. Less expansion means less internal tension for the same temperature jump — boiling water onto a room-temperature pot stays comfortably inside the safety margin. It's the same reason laboratory glassware survives a Bunsen burner.

What this means at the tea table

You can pour at a full boil without tempering the pot first, move from counter to warmer without ceremony, and watch the leaves open — the optical clarity is a side benefit of the same clean recipe. The honest limits

Thermal shock resistance is not impact resistance — borosilicate chips and breaks like any glass when dropped. And no teapot should go from freezer to open flame; resistance has a range, not immunity. Handwash, avoid metal scouring, and the pot outlives the habit.
