A home espresso setup needs far less gear than the forums suggest. A machine, a tamper that fits your basket, a scale, and somewhere to knock the puck. Everything else is an upgrade, not a requirement.

Start with four things: machine, correctly sized tamper, 0.1 g scale, knock box. Add a puck screen and dosing funnel once your shots are consistent — not before.

The machine sets the ceiling

A 9-bar machine with stable temperature matters more than any accessory. A compact unit like the PCM03S espresso machine covers home use; for travel or small counters, a portable espresso maker trades pressure stability for size.

The tamper must match the basket

Tampers come in 51, 53, and 58 mm — and the wrong size leaves an uncompressed ring around the puck edge. Measure your portafilter basket before buying. Our tamper size guide covers how to measure; a flat-base wood-handle tamper is available in all three sizes.

The scale is not optional

Espresso is a ratio: dose in, liquid out, time. Without a 0.1 g scale you are guessing on all three. A rechargeable coffee scale with timer handles both dose and shot weight.

The unglamorous essential: a knock box

Spent pucks go somewhere. Knocking them into the sink strainer gets old in a week. A shock-absorbent knock box is the cheapest quality-of-life upgrade in the kit.

Second-wave upgrades

Once your shots repeat, two small tools tighten the puck itself: a puck screen for even water contact and a dosing funnel to stop grounds spilling over the basket edge.
