Espresso tampers come in three common sizes — 51, 53, and 58 mm — and the number must match your portafilter basket, not your machine brand. A tamper even 1 mm too small leaves loose grounds around the edge and channels the shot.
In brief
58 mm = most prosumer machines. 51 mm = most compact home machines. 53 mm = some mid-range brands. Measure the basket's inner diameter with a ruler — takes ten seconds.
How to measure your basket
Remove the basket from the portafilter and measure the inner diameter across the top. Round down to the nearest standard size: a basket measuring 58.5 mm takes a 58 mm tamper. If you're between sizes, smaller fits; bigger jams.
What each size usually means
51 mm — compact home machines and most portable espresso makers. 53 mm — a middle standard used by several mid-range brands. 58 mm — the commercial standard, shared by most prosumer machines. The flat-base wood-handle tamper comes in all three, so the size is a menu choice rather than a hunt.
Flat or convex base?
Flat is the default for a reason: even compression across the puck, no guesswork about curvature matching the basket. Convex bases exist to seal puck edges, but they solve a problem better fixed by dosing evenly — a dosing funnel keeps grounds level and inside the basket before you tamp.
Pressure matters less than level
Once the puck is compressed, extra force does nothing — water follows the path of least resistance, so a tilted tamp channels regardless of pressure. Tamp on a stable surface: a tamper mat protects both the counter and the portafilter spouts.
Where the tamper fits in the kit
The tamper is one of four essentials in a home setup — the full list is in our home espresso starter kit guide. If you're deciding between more puck-prep tools, start with distribution tool vs tamper.
