A tamper compresses the coffee bed; a distribution tool levels it first. They are sequential steps, not competitors — but if you own only one, own the tamper. Distribution can be done by hand; compression cannot.

In brief

Tamper = mandatory. Distributor = useful if your grinder clumps or your shots run unevenly despite a level tamp. A dosing funnel plus a stir often does the same job for less.

What each tool actually does

Grounds land in the basket as a mound, often with clumps and hidden voids. A distributor's angled fins sweep the top layer flat as you twist. The tamper then compresses that leveled bed into a uniform puck. Order matters: distribute, then tamp — never the reverse.

Why the tamper wins if you pick one

You can level grounds with a stir and a tap of the portafilter. You cannot compress a puck by hand. A correctly sized flat-base tamper — sizing covered in the tamper size guide — is non-negotiable hardware.

When a distributor earns its slot

Two honest cases: your grinder produces clumps that a stir doesn't break, or your naked-portafilter shots spray sideways despite careful prep. A distributor makes the leveling step mechanical and repeatable — useful when several people share one machine and technique varies.

The budget middle path

A dosing funnel keeps grounds inside the basket and makes stirring practical without mess. Funnel, stir, settle, tamp — that sequence covers most home setups. Add a puck screen on top and water distribution is handled at both ends.

Build the sequence, not the drawer

Every tool here serves one shot variable. Start with the four essentials in the home espresso starter kit guide, then add puck-prep tools only when a specific symptom calls for them. The gear is in the Coffee Brewing collection.
